The Princeton Tapes are a series of files initially recorded onto cassette tape by Princeton Tapes Vincent in the late 1980s. They were received in two batches in 2018, and come in various formats, including digital audio files, text transcripts, and cassette tapes.

Given they are recorded by a 1980s version of Vincent, and due to the content of the fiftieth audio file, TOWER ON THE LAKE, the Princeton Tapes serve as very strong evidence for the Iteration Cycle.

William Davidson Tapes[]

On February 21, 2018, Reddit/Discord user TheSharp0ne received a package in the mail, likely from the office of William Davidson and his 'unnamed client'. The package contained a tape with unrolled film, some grass (or some type of weed or moss) and a USB drive.

On the USB were 33 recordings — 24 audio files, and 9 text files serving as transcripts without accompanying audio.

The files are digitized versions of the contents of a tape recorder belonging to Princeton Tapes Vincent, which was gifted to him by his grandmother as an early Christmas present in 1988. It chronicles his struggles with addiction, and with a tall man and a feral animal that are following him, and his discovery of Fairmount Vincent and the Fairmount Children's Home.

Correspondence from TheSharp0ne suggests there were additional audio files in the package, but they were damaged, which is why only the transcripts remain:

I received the following files on a USB, nearly 8 months after initially contacting William Davidson. One of the old tape recordings were in there too, but seemed too damaged to restore. This was accompanied by a folder with a transcript of some recordings that didn't have digital files. I've typed them up to make it easier for others to follow along.

I'm not sure if Vinny wants us to listen to these. I almost contemplated not releasing them, but I truly think listening to these recordings is going to be the only way for us to help Vinny now. HABIT, if you're reading this, fuck you.

The original William Davidson files can be viewed on Google Drive.

Tape 3[]

A further two tapes were found in Box #7, which Rabbit #061 (Discord user DixieWolf) found in her closet. One tape appeared to be the answering machine tape from Dr. James Corenthal's answering machine, while the other, labelled "Tape 3", contained further accounts of Princeton Tapes Vince and was accompanied by a USB with digital files containing the same audio. There were 18 audio files on Tape 3 (available on YouTube).

The audio files on Tape 3 chronicle Vince's encounters with alleged UFOs and supernatural entities, as well as him meeting Roger, the editor of a Princeton Paranormal Magazine, and the subsequent investigations into paranormal happenings they undertake together.

Notes[]

  • HABIT isn’t present in the tapes.
  • The Rake is described chasing and darting around Vince's car as he drives in THE SUBURBS, a, and can talk, as heard in THE VISIT.
  • In [COLD TURKEY, b], Vince describes himself as experiencing withdrawal from substances. He also describes how he used to wake up and see "him", and speculates about whether this was because of the "substances", his "fucked up brain chemistry", or a nightmare. He mentions knowing at the end of the day when he's falling asleep, "he" is there watching Vince, a "constant companion".
    • This is likely evidence that Princeton Vincent is being stalked by Slenderman.
    • Vince implies that the drug use prevented this, and that he's expecting going clean to bring Slenderman back.
  • In MORNING, Vinny mentions feeling "like he met his biological mum or something", which suggests he was at some point adopted.
  • Vinny comes into contact with a certain Dr Gordon Peters.
  • Roger is played by Tim Sutton, who played the character Tim Wright in Marble Hornets.
  • It is speculated that Roger may be Roger Paladino, a police officer who was hunting HABIT in the early 2000s. Roger Paladino was captured — and presumabily killed — by HABIT.

Dates[]

  • The tapes start in December 1987.
  • HELLO WORLD A has several dates mentioned: 2 weeks before Christmas (December 11th), Christmas Day (December 25th), December 26th, January 15th, and January 18th.
  • (In HELLO WORLD A, 92.3 K-Rock is playing in the background. The station was in operation under that name between 1985 and 2005 and again from 2007-2009.)
  • The date August 16th is mentioned in COLD TURKEY A.
  • The song "Blue Monday" by New Order (this is a version from 1988) plays on the radio in HOME.
  • In LIVING THE DREAM Vinny watches The Price is Right; the episode is from March 2nd, 1988.
  • FRIENDS_GAMING takes place in (7th of June mentioned at start of tape) 1988, due to the mention of Michael Dukakis running for president.
  • A news report on Hurricane Hugo is overheard in HOME LIFE, dating it to (or right after) September 22nd, 1989 (when Hugo made landfall in the U.S.).
  • 1989 is when Pet Sematary came out (Vinny watches it in MOVIES).
  • Vinny mentions The Phillies winning in SHOPPING, placing it on June 8th, 1989.
  • 1993 is the start of Davidson’s practice (according to his website).
  • A thorough analysis of and speculation on the dates of the events in the Princeton Tapes by EMH Discord user ren#0333 can be found here (Spoilers for EMH).

Speculation[]

  • Vinny is mentally ill and goes to group therapy.
    • If he was mentally ill he may have been Bipolar. Several of his symptoms match it.
  • Vinny may have been addicted to MDMA, or Molly.
    • In HELLO WORLD A he says “Uh, everything in my- in my life is good. For the most part. What’s been going on? Uhhhhhm, Molly is good. I still don’t have a girlfriend, but I still have my- I do have my dog, so that’s- that’s good. She’s, great, as always.”
      • So, alternatively, Molly could simply be his dog.
    • An MDMA overdose can result in panic attacks, faintness, hypertension (high blood pressure), seizures, and loss of consciousness. This, in combination with the convulsions previously mentioned, align with several things that happened to Vinny at the end of FINDING FAIRMOUNT.
    • Peters also says at the end of FINDING FAIRMOUNT: “I have no idea. Some kind of seizure or stroke. He ingested all of that— and vomited it back up. I’m not entirely certain.”
      • This doesn't necessarily mean he died of an overdose. Vinny might have had pills on him at the time and Peters simply assumed he took all of them before their meeting.
